program overview

Around the Way Girls Book Club is a literacy and empowerment program designed for African-American/Black girls ages 8 to 13 who are passionate about reading and writing or who are just beginning to discover the joy of both. Since its launch in July 2019, the program has been dedicated to building confidence, strengthening comprehension, and supporting academic achievement.

Every participant receives free books to grow their personal home library, thanks to the generous donations we receive. While the program is designed for ages 8–13, younger or older youth may also be accepted based on their individual reading needs.

This book club is more than just reading—it’s a safe and inspiring space where girls see themselves reflected in the stories they explore. Through books that are both relatable and empowering, participants not only develop a love for literacy but also for themselves.

In addition to reading and writing, our sessions weave in lessons on:

  • Self-love & self-advocacy
  • Social justice & leadership
  • Creative writing & critical thinking
  • Healthy relationships & mindsets

The Around the Way Girls Book Club equips young ladies with the tools to grow academically, socially, and personally—using literacy as the foundation for lifelong empowerment.

Being able to identify yourself in books is crucial to keeping Black kids interested in reading, which is why Escape Velocity advocates for access to culturally diverse literacy books and resources.

Reading is the gatekeeper to functioning and succeeding academically, professionally, and civically. It’s important for Black kids and other kids of color, to have a higher reading and writing proficiency. We do this by teaching them how to read in the context of their identity and with a purpose; when we teach the why, young people will be eager to learn how.
