Bebe moore campbell minority mental health awareness month
July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
In May of 2008, the US House of Representatives announced July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities.
Campbell was the co-founder of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Urban Los Angeles. She worked to bring mental health support and education to underserved communities by speaking directly to people about the negative effects of stigma and providing mental health information.
When Campbell passed away after a battle with cancer, her friends and family worked to see her vision through. The group gained support from two representatives who co-signed legislation to create Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Mental Health Awareness month in May 2008.
🗣 Mental Health disparities
disproportionately affect people of color and is a problem we must recognize. Underserved communities often suffer from poor mental health as a result of multiple factors, such as a lack of funding/access, discrimination in healthcare, and cultural stigma as well.
Help us bring awareness this month by talking, sharing and posting about mental health.
