Responding to the needs of youth and their families
Summer Reading
Summer reading challenge
Avoid the Summer Slide! While three months may not seem like much, that time really adds up for kids who don’t have access to books or educational activities. Summer slide sets in, and without access to summer learning resources, kids fall behind.
A study of students in Baltimore, MD showed that kids without access to books over the summer were behind their peers during the next school year. And as years passed, the effect accumulated. By the end of 5th grade, kids in need were nearly three years behind their peers in reading skills.
Participants will be entered into the challenge to win prizes by reading at least 4 books during the Summer. There are two age ranges 8-10 and 11-13.
We want to thank the Sacramento Literacy Foundation for selecting and funding our Summer Reading proposal for 2023.

Yes, I really loved the connections she made with the others & the mental health component of the check-ins/sharing. It helped my daughter by being in a safe space to express her emotions, thoughts and ideas with her peers.
It was great watching my niece and nephew grow in their reading skills and seeing them get excited about choosing their books.
I enjoyed the program very much. In encourages us to do more reading this summer. My daughter also enjoyed the weekly check-ins and in-person meetings as well.
