International Literacy Day 2021

International Literacy Day 2021 📖

We are celebrating International Literacy Day today, September 8, 2021. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and to look towards possible concerns. Literacy is a crucial part of a healthy and happy society. A person who knows how to read and write can keep up with changing trends, connect with people, can have effective conversations, understand global issues, and much more. Reading is the gatekeeper to functioning and succeeding academically, professionally, and civically. It underlies access to virtually all knowledge!

Our founder, Dana Maeshia, was a true literacy advocate. That’s why she created Escape Velocity to reach the youth in the black community and show them how important literacy is. She wanted to change the narrative and disrupt the school to prison pipeline. She was very articulate with her words and loved writing.

Pick up a book 📖 and lets read! In honor of Dana Maeshia RIP 🕊

Our youth literacy programs include Boys in the Hood Book Club and Around the Way Girls Book Club.
